Catamaran style sailing dates back to 500 BC by the Polynesians, who used dual canoe style boats which created larger vessels with more stability. In modern history, prior to the 19th-century they were not widely built, therefore it was not commonplace to buy or rent a catamaran. Nowadays, they are built with two hulls, giving them extra buoyancy and allowing the vessel to become more stable than a traditional single-hull yacht of the same depth.
