Marmaris
People visiting Marmaris Turkey for the first time in 50 years would be amazed at what they see. It was a small fishing village in a great natural harbour back then, an obvious location for development; and developed it has. At the height of summer, there can be 250,000 people staying in the many hotels, apartments, and private villas, all there for the hot climate, busy nightlife, and obligatory suntan. It has become one of the top tourist towns in Turkey, indeed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Located in Southwest Turkey, Marmaris is one of a number of resorts on this coast, commonly known as the Turquoise Coast. The wonderful holiday climate is such that from spring right around to the approach of winter visitors can expect plenty of sunshine, hospitable locals, good cuisine, and plenty to do. There is such nice weather in Marmaris from April to June.
The name Marmaris comes from the Turkish word ‘mermer’ which means ‘marble. The region is famous for marble and the port played an important role in trade. There was a settlement here long before the name Marmaris was adopted. The historian Herodotus states that there was a castle here in 3000 BC while in 334 BC Alexander, the Great took it and housed soldiers there due to its obvious strategic value.
Centuries later, it was a base for the Ottoman attack on the Knights of St. John on the nearby island of Rhodes. As a result, the Marmaris castle was fully restored. Another notable page in its history was in 1798 when Lord Nelson sheltered with his fleet on the way to Egypt to defeat Napoleon
This is a stunning area with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the night while several chances to escape the crowds in the many little coves on the nearby coastline. In many ways, the region is best enjoyed from the sea though if you have patience with the winding roads, it is very rewarding to hit the road and explore the activities of Marmaris, its coves, and small villages by road or sea with Blue cruise Marmaris as well.
